Subiaco Retreat

From September 30 to October 10, 2013, Fr. Mark Smith and I led a pilgrimage to Rome for the Year of Faith and for the deaconate ordination of seminarian Aaron Qureshi – a priestly vocation from St. Josephs on Capitol Hill. During the pilgrimage, I gave a spiritual retreat at Subiaco, Italy a small town east of Rome. The retreat was given over two days at the retreat house adjacent to the Benedictine monastery of St. Scholastica. Subiaco is considered to be the birthplace of western monasticism and European Christendom since it was here that St. Benedict set up the first benedictine abbey which was later replicated all over Europe. The monasteries became centers not just of prayer and work, but of commerce, learning, and hospitality. The following three talks were recorded during the Subiaco retreat.
